G.T. Humanists Meeting: Separation of Church and State
July 8 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Join the Grand Traverse Humanists for a presentation by attorney Eleanor Lynn on the separation of church and state. Is Separation of Church and State in the United States dead on arrival? Should we give the Establishment Clause a decent Christian burial?
Eleanor Lynn will give an expert legal analysis of Supreme Court decisions issued over the past forty years dealing with “freedom of religion.“ These decisions have significantly eroded the U.S. Constitution’s first amendment provisions that prohibit any law that would interfere with the free exercise of any religion or would provide for a State-supported religion.
Eleanor Lynn is a well-recognized attorney with extensive legal experience in diverse areas of the law. She was in private practice for over twenty years and an adjunct professor of law at Cooley Law School, as well as an assistant Attorney General for the State of Iowa. Also, she was a legal researcher for the University of Iowa where she concentrated on Constitutional law and Native American law. Currently, she is very active in leadership positions in Traverse City and teaches classes on the First Amendment and the Supreme Court, at Northwestern Michigan College.
