G.T. Humanists Meeting: FishPass
November 3 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

For our November 3 meeting (6 PM at the Traverse Area District Library), the Grand Traverse Humanists will host Dr. Dan Zielinski, who will present a program on the Traverse City FishPass project. Dr. Zelinski is the principal engineer and scientist for the project which will provide a new dam on the Boardman/Ottaway River in downtown Traverse City. The project wall also include fish sorting technologies, which will select desirable Great Lakes fish such as sturgeon and allow them pass to their spawning grounds upriver. It will prevent undesirable species, such as the sea lamprey, from passing.
Dr. Dan Zelinsky is the principal engineer and scientist with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. He received his PhD in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota. Prior to his work on the Traverse City FishPass project, he was with the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center, working on ways to prevent invasive Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes. Dan also serves on the GLFC Barrier Task Force, Sea Lamprey Research Board, and is an adjunct professor at Michigan State University.
