We are a community for the non-religious in the Grand Traverse area, offering a forum for discussing and advancing a secular worldview based on our common humanity. Our programs include monthly speakers and discussions, film and book groups, and various volunteer and social events. All are free and open to the public. You might remember faith healer Peter Popoff as the guy that James Randi exposed on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson back in 1986…although he claimed to be receiving “revelations from God,” he was actually being fed information about revival attendees by his wife through an in-ear radio transmitter. He declared bankruptcy the next year. How is it, then, that today his ministry rakes in millions of dollars urging people through television infomercials to request “miracle spring water?”. Join us at The History Center of Traverse City, 322 Sixth St., at 7 p.m. for a short video and lecture presentation by followed by discussion. Presenter Jim Skinner has an M.A. from Aberdeen University, Scotland, and taught history at Brandon University in Manitoba for 28 years before retiring to Victoria, where he has been a sessional lecturer at the University of Victoria in the departments of English, History, and History in Art. He is also the president of the Victoria Secular Humanists Association.

Roy Zimmerman writes fiercely funny songs about ignorance, war and greed. In eleven albums over twenty years, Roy has brought the sting of satire to the struggle for Peace and Social Justice. His songs are heard on NPR, PRI, Air America and Sirius Radio. Roy’s YouTube videos have garnered over two million views and tens of thousands of comments, many of them coherent. The Los Angeles Times says, “Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society’s foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer.”

- Grand Traverse Humanists at Friday Night Live!
The Grand Traverse Humanists recently sponsored a booth at Friday Night Live, promoting bicycling in conjunction with the event’s Cherry Roubaix Bike Fest theme. Participants of all ages had fun guessing how far it was by bike to various locations around town. We pointed out the benefits of cycling as a humanistic solution to some of our most pressing problems: reliance on foreign oil, high price of gas, obesity. Many people expressed appreciation for the presence of Humanists at Friday Night Live. We’re looking forward to next year!

Meeting at the Library: Lake Invaders

Join us for a presentation by William Rapai, author of Lake Invaders: Invasive Species and the Battle for the Future of the Great Lakes. There are over 180 exotic species in the Great Lakes, and most are innocuous…but a handful of them are conducting an all-out assault on the Great Lakes and winning the battle (sea lamprey, alewife, round goby, quagga mussel, zebra mussel, Eurasian watermilfoil, spiny water flea, and rusty crayfish). Mr. Rapai sounds a call to action and makes a strong case for what is at stake; examining the environmental, economical, and politic issues at stake in a balanced, lively, and accessible way.

The third Monday of each month is Grand Traverse Humanists volunteer night at the State Theatre! Come take tickets, sell reasonably-priced popcorn and drinks, help with clean-up after, and earn a voucher for a future free movie.
