SUMMARY:G.T. Humanists Bike Ride
DESCRIPTION:Our next Humanists Bike Ride event will be on Sunday\, August 4\, leaving from Darrow Park at 11:00 a.m. We will ride to Hop Lot in Suttons Bay for lunch and then return. If the approximately 32 mile round trip is too much\, feel free to join along the way at locations such as Cherry Bend Road\, Fouch Road\, or Lakeview Drive. And as a bonus\, some with electric bikes have been extending the ride and going on longer scenic excursions apart from the planned route. \nPlease RSVP to Ed Scholl at Ecs11213@gmail.com if you are planning to join. If you will be joining somewhere other than Darrow Park\,  please let us know\, so we know to look for you elsewhere. \n\n

SUMMARY:G.T. Humanists Meeting: Microplastics in the Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Grand Traverse Humanists will present a talk by Art Hirsch on microplastics in the Great Lakes.\n\n\nArt Hirsch will discuss the sources\, impacts\, legislation and mitigation actions to address microplastics. Microplastics in the Great Lakes is an emerging water quality issue that has the potential of impacting human health and the aquatic environment. It has been estimated that microplastics are consumed by the US population at a rate of 5 grams per week; this is weight of a credit card. Microplastics are found in our food\, water and even beer along the Great Lakes. Fish are ingesting microplastics that causes them to starve. Over 22 million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes every year and Lake Michigan is the #1 source.\n\nArt Hirsch is a former environmental consultant with over 30 years of experience. He lives in Boulder\, Colorado and spends his summers in Pentwater\, Michigan. He is originally from North Muskegon\, Michigan and he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and a Master of Science degree from the University of Colorado. His expertise is in the areas of water quality\, stormwater management\, sustainability and environmental impact assessments. He is a member of the Climate Reality Project founded by former Vice President Gore and the For the Love of Water organization located in Traverse City and the Great Lakes Plastic Pollution Solutions Coalition. He is currently working on the Enbridge Line 5 Shutdown\, GHG reductions associated with transportation\, oil and gas operations and microplastics.\n\n\nPlease note this meeting will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 6726 Center Rd. instead of our usual meeting place (the library).

SUMMARY:Hungry Humanists: NoBo Mrkt
DESCRIPTION:Grand Traverse Humanists will meet to dine at NoBo Mrkt in the Commongrounds Cooperative in Traverse City.\n\nWe will have the entire space to ourselves\, including the outside deck area overlooking the river. The restaurant is actually temporarily closed to the public\, but they are honoring the reservation that we made several weeks ago. Therefore\, we get to have a private party. Because it is technically closed\, the food menu will be more limited than usual\, but they will have sandwiches and salads\, and we will be given Happy Hour prices for the entire time we are there.\n\nAlso\, for those interested in adding a little musical entertainment that night\, a funky jazz group called Funky Fun will be performing at The Alluvion\, located upstairs at Commongrounds. They will perform from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Donation entry $10.\n\nIf you plan on attending\, please RSVP by texting Bob Simon at (517) 449-3432.
