DESCRIPTION:Join the Grand Traverse Humanists as they welcome retired cardiologist and GTH member Dr. Mark Elliott for a talk on ultra-processed food. What are so-called “ultra-processed foods\,” and what is their relationship to obesity\, diabetes\, cancer\, and overall health? Popular author Michael Pollan describes them as “edible food-like substances\,” and they’re designed to be hyperpalatable and even addictive. Dr. Elliot will explore the science behind these foods and how we can make sure our own diet is healthy and balanced.

DESCRIPTION:Grand Traverse Humanists will meet at the home of Heather Kingham and Mark Elliott to discuss Heather Cox Richardson’s latest book\, “Democracy Awakening.” \nIn “Democracy Awakening\,” Richardson explains how\, over the decades\, a small group of wealthy people have made war on American ideals. By weaponizing language and promoting false history they have led us into authoritarianism — creating a disaffected population and then promising to recreate an imagined past where those people could feel important again. She argues that taking our country back starts by remembering the elements of the nation’s true history that marginalized Americans have always upheld. Their dedication to the principles on which this nation was founded has enabled us to renew and expand our commitment to democracy in the past.
